Zelensky Remains Guarded on Cruise Missile Discussions with President Trump Following White House Summit

President Volodymyr Zelensky seems to have left a White House meeting empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired Tomahawk cruise missiles from US President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president stated after the civil meeting that he and Trump had talked about long-range missiles, but decided not to make statements on that issue "because the US administration does not want an intensification."

President Trump's Position on Weapons Transfer

Although Trump did not rule out supplying the missiles to the Ukrainian forces, his attitude during the White House discussions was non-committal.

"With hope Ukraine won't require them, hopefully we'll be able to end the conflict without thinking about Tomahawks," Trump remarked, noting that the United States needed the missile systems for its own defense.

Trump said that providing the weapons would be "a significant escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

International Diplomatic Moves

This high-level meeting occurred just a day after President Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to hold face-to-face talks in Budapest in the near future.

Following the meeting, Trump used his social media platform to call for Kyiv and Moscow to "stop where they are" and end the war.

Ukrainian Perspective and Proposals

President Zelensky proposed that his country could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in return for the Tomahawks, a suggestion that elicited smiles and nodding from the American president.

Zelensky also praised his counterpart on his role in achieving a peace agreement in the Middle East, suggesting that the US leader could capitalize on that momentum to help resolve the conflict in his country.

Upcoming Talks and Considerations

Questioned about whether the prospect of Ukraine obtaining Tomahawks had prompted Putin to agree to meet the US leader, Zelensky responded, "It's unclear," adding that the prospect had caused Moscow to be "afraid because it is a strong weapon."

Asked if he was departing Washington with greater optimism that Ukraine would get the missiles, he said, "My approach is realistic."

The Ukrainian leader maintains that employing these missiles to target Moscow's energy infrastructure would severely weaken Russia's military funding capabilities.

Personal Impact of the War

"Truth and democracy will win, and all the terrorism and evil will vanish," stated one local businessman. "We simply wish to exist peacefully, we refuse to surrender, we just want them to leave us alone."

The emotional response came as citizens in the Ukrainian capital continue to rebuild their communities and businesses damaged by ongoing missile attacks.

Continuing Peace Process

In recent days, the US president had shown an willingness to the concept of selling the Tomahawks, even as the Russian leader cautioned that such a decision would additional pressure the bilateral relations.

President Trump had anticipated that a face-to-face summit in Alaska in August would help convince Putin to begin substantial negotiations to end the war, but that summit did not achieve a significant progress.

The leaders currently preparing for further discussions as the conflict in Ukraine persists to develop.
