A former US state department official, a foreign policy expert, observed, "Putin is trying to disrupt the progress toward increased pressure on Russia." He added, "We'll see tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a truce by pushing Moscow to get serious appear to have decreased."

This situation followed the US president had recently been hardening his rhetoric toward Russia until the recent conversation with the Russian president, which the Russian government described as "highly open and trustful."

EU Fuel Sanctions and Economic Impact

EU authorities have set a requirement for fuel importers into the EU to prove their fuels are not sourced from Russian crude, according to a document published on Thursday. This measure is part of the European Union's forthcoming ban on imports of refined products processed from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Moscow over its military actions in Ukraine.

Market experts noted that investment patterns appeared to be factoring in the possible reduction of India's imports of Russian crude. Several oil processors in India are getting ready to reduce Russian oil imports, with expectations of a gradual reduction, as reported by sources familiar with the situation.

"This is a positive development for the oil market as it would eliminate a major buyer of Russian oil," commented Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were steady on the trading day.

Military Situation and Energy Attacks

A massive Russian unmanned aircraft and missile attack hit gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, resulting in outages in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russia deployed hundreds of drones and many of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"During this fall, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our energy infrastructure," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks affected the areas of Chernihiv, Kharkiv, central Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine and western Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the European Union had no choice but to strengthen defensive systems against Russian threats. She revealed a "roadmap" to prepare for possible conflict by 2030, including a new anti-drone system to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is projected to begin working in its first phase by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the following year. Brussels hopes to secure the support of EU leaders at a meeting next week.
