The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
