The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
