The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
