The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
