The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
