Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, having been sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
