A Controversial Road to Victory

The president's re-election bid focused heavily on his security achievements in a perennially volatile country.

"There was a methodical attempt to influence the outcome," alleged opposition figure Anicet Dologuélé.

He has faced significant backlash since a 2023 change removed term restrictions, paving the way for his ongoing run for power.

Election Details and Disputes

Over 2.4 million people were registered for the 28 December general election, which monitors called largely calm despite operational delays.

Based on preliminary figures, the incumbent secured seventy-six percent of the vote.

  • His closest rival, ex- Prime Minister Anicet-Georges Dologuélé, garnered fifteen percent.
  • A further former prime minister, Henri-Marie Dondra, followed with 3%.

Both opponents have demanded the results to be invalidated, claiming extensive malpractices and fraud.

The government has firmly rejected these claims.

A Nation Stuck in Instability

The CAR is one of the continent's least developed and most unstable nations, even with its wealth of natural resources like diamonds and uranium.

The landlocked state has been mired in conflict since 2013.

A peace agreement contributed to ease tensions, though a number of armed factions later withdrew from the accord.

Geopolitical Repercussions

Experts note that Touadéra's victory could further the influence of Russia, which has provided security support in exchange for access to lucrative assets.

The CAR was among the first continent nations where the Russia-linked private military company the Wagner Group became operational, providing protection to Touadéra's government.

The nation's top court has until January 20th to adjudicate any challenges and proclaim the official outcome.
