No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
