Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
