Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously served in military or defense capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to defend and defend this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to follow directives that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to provoke a furious response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified announcement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme online messages and retract his aggressive discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.
Representatives' Defiant Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also issued a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this nation and took an oath to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "Every American must join forces and denounce the ex-president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."
He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's historic in US history."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and determine all that."
White House Response
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can result in fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
