Barca Manager Hansi Flick Pledges to Change Behavior because of Grandchildren

Hansi Flick

Hansi Flick claimed victory in the Champions League with the German giants in the year 2020.

Barca manager Hansi Flick states he does not want his young family members seeing the actions that resulted in his dismissal during the match against the Catalan rivals.

The 60-year-old received a caution for mocking applause the match official when he indicated four minutes of injury time, following the team's wasted opportunities with the score level.

When substitute Ronald Araujo netted a late winner for the club, Flick participated in the fans in wild celebrations and was given a another caution for making an obscene gesture.

"I don't like my image in such a condition on TV, and I hope to prevent my descendants from observing their elder like that," the manager said. "Therefore I probably have to adjust my behavior."

Flick Attributes Emotion to Love for the Club

Addressing media at a press briefing before the team face Olympiacos in the Champions League, Flick linked the gesture for which he was penalised to the strong emotions he has for the team, which he has managed since this year.

He was manager at Bayern Munich when the German side became the initial to net eight times against Barca in more than 50 years in 2020, and claims to have been reserved on the sideline as his team breezed into a Champions League semi-final.

"I recall when I was manager of Bayern Munich, the video of the match against Barca showed that I had the identical response to the initial, next and eighth goals," said Flick. "Observers said I didn't show joy! Right now I'm showing greater passion, it's true, because this team has transformed me."

"Perhaps I should control my emotions, but I love Barcelona, the city and its supporters, and that's why I always put in maximum effort."

Suspension for El Clasico

The manager's dismissal comes with a sideline suspension which will confine him to the seating area of the Bernabeu as his team face Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday – though the club are appealing against the ruling.

Barca leader Joan Laporta claimed a "hidden influence" was behind official Jesus Gil Manzano's decisions against the opponent – implying support for the Madrid club – though the coach himself declined to get drawn into allegations of referee partiality.

"I had nothing against the referee," he said. "I wasn't complaining at him but he interpreted it that way and that's something I have to acknowledge."
