'Top class' Travis Head Century Puts Australia Cruising To Victory Against the English
English Team Individual Evaluations
Zak Crawley – One
Tipped in Aussie conditions but managed just the fourth duck in both innings from an England opener in just a handful of deliveries.
Duckett – Five
Got starts during each knock. His dismissal on Saturday was when it began to fall apart for England.
Pope – 6
Seems better for technical tweaks. Opening match in the series tends to be his strongest, then it goes downhill. England require him to build on this.
Joe Root – 1
Far off that first hundred on Australian soil. England require the wisdom from their star performer to have any chance to come back from this defeat.
Harry Brook – Five
His fifty in the first innings was lively, yet important. Awful shot in the second innings.
Stokes – 6
Came back after being injured with a five-wicket haul, though looked out of touch with the bat. Struggled while fielding in the face of Head's assault.
Smith – 4
Might possess the skills to succeed in Australia, yet must to smarten up. Will likely face a lot of bouncers from now on.
Atkinson – Five
Part of the impressive English first-innings bowling performance and tried to carry the fight with the bat later on. Among the bowlers that fell apart on Saturday evening.
Carse – 5
Similar to above, plus the spice of getting taken apart by Head.
Jofra Archer – 5
Looked impressive with the ball initially and was the best among struggling teammates in the second. Might yet play a key role on the series.
Wood – Five
Went wicketless, but extremely impressive to even take part given his time away.
Australian Team Individual Evaluations
Weatherald – Six
Debutant had tough luck to be exposed against Archer in the first innings, later played his part in the sensational pursuit of runs.
Khawaja – 3
An unusual match. Did not look fully fit and spent time off the field. Took several key catches in the slips, yet also looked slow in the field. Earns a point due to his injury that allowed Head to open.
Labuschagne – Seven
A successful return to the side. Handled the English pressure better than most in the first innings, then backed up Head in the second.
Smith – Five
Seemed out of sorts in the first innings. Unnecessary before the game attack about Panesar.
Travis Head – 9
Possibly unfair not to award a perfect score, but he attempted a rather poor stroke in the first innings. His second-innings hundred proved to be an all-time great innings.
Green – 5
Took the key dismissal of Pope early. Rattled by a Wood short ball during his innings. Hardly needed later in the match.
Alex Carey – Five
Attempted an aggressive response versus the English attack on the first evening. Tidy behind the stumps.
Mitchell Starc – 9
Carried the burden of the bowling in the absence of Cummins and Josh Hazlewood achieving the first Australian Ashes 10-wicket haul for two decades.
Boland – Six
Below top form in the first innings. Improved later to spark the English collapse.
Brendan Doggett – 6
Solid first appearance. Quite capable replacement for Cummins and others.
Nathan Lyon – Two
Almost an onlooker in a match dominated by pace. Possibly suffered an injury when struck by Wood.
