The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with injury setbacks following revealing that star striker Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The German forward has been absent since August due to an operation on his knee. Originally slated to be available earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player faced a hurdle when advancing his training and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This update leaves a selection headache for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Further fitness issues involve defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta feels the significant outlay on reinforcements ahead of this season has resulted in a more robust situation to navigate such absences.

When asked if increased squad depth was benefiting their championship push, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, because this season has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now the problems with the backline,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel Merino.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Star

Speaking about the setback previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the next level and now it’s looking like we have overcome that hurdle.”

Arteta expressed his personal desire to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, for me, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his character, his nature. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
