An Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor

During 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and started wandering near a gaming venue, believing I could pass those hours somewhere that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at the admissions interview the next day, but as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more individuals like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a woman noticed me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my situation and right away she suggested I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location to rest for the evening.

Looking back, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a woman inviting a man she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up attending the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her good deed tenfold. We could all use more folks with such compassion.
